Karumba TrawlersKarumba Sunset

Karumba. The road stops here. The Matilda Highway, that is. - and here it is, the superb Gulf of Carpentaria.
Situated 69km from Normanton, Karumba is the only port town in the region. Just 8km down the road is Karumba Point. Because of the nature of the coastline, Karumba Point is the only stretch of beach in the central Savannah that can be accessed by bitumen road. That only serves to make it more special to those who visit. Anyone who has been on the beach at sunset will assure you it's a memorable experience.
Well seasoned travellers who have been just about everywhere in Australia will tell you that there's nowhere with quite the same atmosphere as Karumba in winter. It's friendly, laidback, and a little bit rough and ready.

AT KARUMBA, you're at the tip of the Matilda Highway.
If fantastic seafood (without having to work for it) is what you're after, on offer are feasts ranging from fresh mudcrabs and prawns to the local celebrity, barramundi. On the days when you are prepared to fish for your dinner, you can grab all your necessities from many of the local stores. Fishing in Karumba is always great.
The Norman River, lined with mangroves and alive with wildlife, is a great place to cruise. You won't only be enjoying the birdlife. See if you can spot a crocodile, learn the history of the wharves and maybe catch a crab.
